Job Description
Wildlife Monitors are required to work in remote areas and provide safety and hazard assessments in advance of field workers. Wildlife monitors will be required to travel to site or work from an industrial camp. The monitor will be responsible to closely follow wildlife hazard assessments and act appropriately in high stress situations.
You must be in good physical condition and able to walk long distances while carrying equipment. Preference will be given to applicants with previous work experience in a remote wilderness setting with wildlife encounters ( ie: Hunter, trapper, guide outfitter, adventure tourism, camp safety officer / first aid attendant, etc )
Seasonal work: ( Part time, full time and contract positions available ). There are various assignments available. The work is expected to start in late to early May and will go until approximately December. Your qualifications will determine the type of work assignment and pay.
Due to the high volume of applications, we need further information to ensure your suitability. Compliance with industry safety standards is critical due to the locations we operate and the nature of our business.
Wildlife monitor operations are inherently risky due to working in areas where dangerous wildlife is found. Strict compliance to policies, procedures and protocols is extremely important as failing to do so could result in serious injury or death. If you have any fears about having a direct confrontation with dangerous wildlife, please consider this carefully before applying.
We are transparent in disclosing the type of work conditions you may encounter and we expect our candidates to be honest in the information they provide us so we can make a hiring decision. A large component of the position is working outdoors in varying weather conditions including rain, snow and cold temperatures. The majority of the work will be carried out over the winter months.
Many monitor jobs have the employee posted in a trailer or vehicle where the majority of their time is spent sitting around waiting for something to happen. This position is much different as you will be actively watching small to large work crews in the field. You will need to be constantly assessing hazards and be prepared to implement the appropriate actions. You will be carrying the following equipment at all times while on the work site.
Portable radio: To communicate with the supervisor and other members of the crew for an routine or emergency calls.
Bear spray: You will keep your bear spray accessible at all times when working on the site. A dangerous wildlife encounter is a very real possibility. The client has mandated that we do not carry firearms.
Portable air horn: You will keep your air horn with you so you can alert crew members and scare an animal.
PPE: You will be required to wear your personal protective equipment as directed by company policy and the Wildlife Manager.
The clients we work with are very safety conscious so the chances of an incident occurring are low. In a normal day you may find yourself reviewing safety hazards with the crew, checking the site for proper waste management and filling out forms. The majority of the time will be spent watching for dangerous wildlife. If you have advanced experience, certification and equipment you may be offered a wider variety of assignments such as supervisor.
We are hiring for positions we may have available starting in May 2016 and we are looking for the right people who are ready to be deployed to the field after all of the qualifications, certifications and orientation have been completed.
All positions are hourly, casual / on call. Many employees will receive the equivalent of full time hours based on their availability. Candidates who are not available for full time work are still encouraged to apply as there will be opportunities cover days off, vacations and absences. We are looking for responsible employees who are willing to commit to the entire term of the work.
To complete the application process you will need to complete the Secondary Screening Form. The screening process is designed to be thorough so we know exactly where you are at and what equipment and training is required for you to go to work. Please click on the link to the Secondary Screening form and answer the following questions honestly as we need a complete understanding of your experience and current situation. We will get back to you promptly on receipt of your application.
