Wildlife Monitoring

Backcountry Wildlife Monitoring strives to balance worker safety and conservation of wildlife by taking an active approach to managing threats. Our goal is to deter bears, cougars and other predators from attacking workers by using non lethal methods. Wildlife control is a sophisticated public relations effort for companies. BCWM’s program of non-lethal monitoring can balance concerns while keeping the operation running smoothly.

Wildlife Monitoring
Compliance and Safety Audits

Compliance

Backcountry Wildlife Monitoring can visit and assess your on-site operations in remote locations ensuring that your safety plans are in compliance with WorkSafe BC, the Wildlife Act and regulations. We can custom design a program to keep your workers safe and in compliance with regulations for remote site work. Pipeline operations are under intense scrutiny by regulators, first nations, environmental lobbyists and the public at large. We will ensure that company operations can proceed without sacrificing worker safety while respecting wildlife stewardship values.

Training

WorkSafe BC has mandated that workers in remote areas have training in regards to wildlife attacks and safety procedures and options to ensure their safety on site. BCWM promotes safety for pipeline workers by first and foremost keeping them aware of the dangers of predatory wildlife before they go into the field.

We provide training services in wildlife control, bear aware, safety compliance and wilderness survival for your on site supervisors.

Bear Safety Training

The Keys to Our Success

Wildlife monitors allow your on site employees to perform their tasks free from fear, addressing both company and Worksafe BC safety policies for remote workers.

Our experience with wildlife and predators gained from years of hunting and guiding has enabled our company to put together a viable and effective program for dangerous wildlife control and management.

Understanding of Bear/Wildlife Behavior
This is very important in being able to judge what is a real threat from passive normal behaviour. Our training includes understanding the difference between predatory and defensive bear behaviours and how to deal with the encounter.
Local Knowledge
One of the keys to success is knowing local access trails, roads , terrain etc. This aides our team with threat analysis and providing knowledge of travel routes, trails etc.
Effective Policies/Procedures

BCWM has developed effective policies and procedures to ensure that safety is followed at all times and incidents are reported to ensure that possible conflicts are analyzed and dealt with accordingly.

  • Safe use and storage of firearms
  • Reporting requirements and incident tracking systems
  • Wildlife encounter and defensive spray training
  • Emergency response planning
